Eureka, WA - In response to Oklahoma’s stupid law proposal to require public businesses to post anti-abortion rhetoric in women’s restrooms, many people think it would only be fair to post signs in men’s restrooms too. The signs would read as follows:

If you have ever had sex with a woman without any intent of making a baby, then shame on you. You are a hypocrite. You participate in the act of fertilizing an egg, which may eventually become a person, but you shame women for participating in the same act. You say things to women like “If you don’t want a baby, keep your legs closed.” You make it difficult for women to get safe and adequate healthcare and birth control. You shame and humiliate women for seeking abortions. You shame and humiliate women for being single mothers, because one of your male-buddies who participated in making that child does not participate in raising that child. You think that society needs to protect fetuses inside women’s bodies, but not existing people who are already here, including children. You try to pass thoughtless laws that ban medical procedures for women, make it difficult for women to get healthcare, force women to be lectured and berated, and put up signs in women’s restrooms intended to disgrace them. These are all just attempts for you to control women. It is not ok and it needs to stop right now!

Oklahoma lawmakers have decided to not move forward with their preposterous “women’s bathroom sign” law. Although it is good thing to abandon an idea that intends to spread misogyny, the reason this idea is being abandoned is not because it berates women, but because it would be too expensive for businesses to have to put up signs in women’s restrooms. Sad, just sad.
